Joyce musters the courage to ask Paula, "Is there something wrong with me?" Paula embraces Joyce, "Of course not, you're perfect. The most perfect person I've met." Joyce pulls away and looks Paula in the eyes, searching for sincerity, searching for truth, "You always acted like you had someplace better to be. That I was never good enough." Paula exclaims, "that's not true!" Joyce feels tears well up in her eyes, her blood pressure rise, she blurts out, "You've fucked everyone in this town but me!" Paula is shocked, pulls away, and Joyce reaches her hand out apologetically, "I'm sorry.. that was too far."
It was then that Paula knew. She was avoiding Joyce because she didn't want to confront her own feelings, but now the two women will inevitably collide. They stare into each others eyes, they kiss a magical kiss.
Joyce is back at her laptop, "The rest of the Summer unfolded perfectly. Paula still had trouble waking up in the morning, but now we woke up together-- wrapped in each other's arms. I got an extension on my thesis, and then a transfer to a school nearby. Things were perfect.. and I hoped they'd stay that way forever."
